How Our Hats Are Made: Built for Real Life

When I started Grace ’n Grit, I knew one thing for sure: these hats had to work as hard as the women wearing them. Life on the farm and ranch isn’t gentle, and neither are South Dakota winters. If a hat couldn’t stand up to the wind, chores, and everyday wear, it wasn’t worth making.

So here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how our hats are made and why they’ve quickly become a staple for women who live western.

Fleece-Lined for Warmth

Every Grace ’n Grit hat starts with a soft fleece lining. This isn’t just for comfort — it’s what keeps the bitter wind out while you’re out feeding, breaking ice, or standing in the arena. The fleece adds insulation without bulk, so you can stay warm without feeling weighed down.

Fleece Ear Flaps That Mean Business

The part most women love right away? The ear flaps. They’re also lined with fleece and extend around the back of your neck, giving full coverage where winter usually sneaks in. Whether you fold them down for chores or tuck them up when you head to town, they’re built to protect without losing style.

Durable Canvas Outer Layer

On the outside, we use a strong canvas fabric. Canvas is rugged enough to handle chores, brushing up against hay bales, or even a little mud — but it also wipes clean so your hat always looks sharp. This fabric choice was intentional: it’s tough, easy to care for, and has that classic western feel.

Made for Women, by a Woman Who Needed One

For years, I watched the men grab their trusty ear-flap hats while we women made do with whatever was in the closet — usually doubling a cap with a ear band that was not warm enough, not practical, and definitely not cute. Grace ’n Grit was built to change that.

Our hats combine warmth, durability, and style — so you can head out in the worst weather and still feel good about what you’re wearing. They’re built for real life, because that’s exactly where they came from.
